GAP vs physical gold (dinar/bars), and when each makes sense
Comparing Public Gold GAP and physical gold: how you buy, storage, costs and when each one suits you.
Summary
- GAP: buy from RM100, gold held by Public Gold, no storage fee, records in your statement.
- Physical gold (bars or dinar): you hold it yourself, bought in fixed sizes such as 5 g, 10 g or 1 dinar.
- Both are 24K gold. The differences are how you buy, who stores it and the costs.
- GAP suits starting small and saving regularly; physical gold suits you if you want to hold gold yourself and are prepared to look after it.
Two ways to own gold
With Public Gold, you can own gold through a GAP account or by buying physical gold such as bars and dinar wafers. Both are 24K gold. The differences are in how you buy, how it is stored and the costs involved.
GAP: gold in an account
- How you buy: from RM100, or multiples of RM50, or 1 gram. Weight is recorded to 4 decimal places.

When GAP makes more sense
- You want to start small and add every month.
- You don't want to worry about where to keep the gold.
- You want clear purchase records in one statement.
When physical gold makes more sense
- You want to hold the gold yourself, for example as family savings.
- Your budget covers a full unit.
- You have a safe place to store it and accept the risks.
Many people start with GAP and withdraw physical gold once they have built up enough grams. Whichever you choose, remember that the gold price can fall and no returns are guaranteed.
